Baby hatches to reduce baby dumping cases in Malaysia

Latest statistics of baby dumping in Malaysia – Source: TheStar graphics

As of 2021, baby dumping cases are still rampant in the South East Asian society, Malaysia being the highest in the percentage. Statistics show that an average of 100 babies are abandoned every year in Malaysia.

Most of these babies were dumped in rubbish bins, with 70% found lifeless because they were stuffed into toilets, after probable attempts to flush them down, dumped into the drain, or burned beyond recognition. On average, only 30% of the babies are fortunate enough to be saved and have a chance to live. Baby dumping is a crime, but putting your babies in baby hatches isn’t a crime, and it can help save lives and give the babies a chance to live.

OrphanCare is a non-governmental organization that is ready to help females with unplanned pregnancies to help reduce these baby abandonment cases with their Baby Hatch initiatives.

What is a Baby Hatch?

A baby hatch is a safe haven for babies and or newborns whose birth mother or parents can drop them off and be assured the babies will be safe and given proper care. These birth mothers or parents have decided they are not in a position to keep the baby.

Many also argue that having more baby hatches may encourage more acts of sexual activities with youths, but that is far from the case. When youths lack reproductive health education, getting pregnant and baby hatches are the last thing that will come to their mind. Baby hatches will only come to mind at the very last minute after knowing they got pregnant. That is why baby hatches are necessary, as the hatches provide a safe place for mothers or parents to leave their baby, knowing the baby will receive the love and care of an adoptive family. It also prevents unplanned babies from being abandoned or dumped into unsafe environments.

How does the Baby Hatch work?

Step 1: Open the baby hatch’s door

Step 2: Put the baby gently onto the cot

Step 3: Fill up and sign the consent form to put the baby up for adoption.

Step 4: Place the signed form and the baby’s medical/birth certificate in the box provided.

Step 5: Close the door.

Do not worry. The hatch has a 24 hour CCTV inside, which will not identify the mother, but is there to alert the caretaker when a baby is left in the hatch. Once the baby is inside the hatch and the hatch’s door is closed, it will be locked from the outside to keep the baby safe from any intruders or animals. A few minutes of privacy will be given to the birth mother before the caretaker takes away the baby to give him/her the proper care. Should the mother change her mind, there is an intercom next to the hatch where the mother can speak to the caretaker or the person in charge and the necessary arrangements will be made.
