Baby hatch for Selangor

SHAH ALAM: Selangor is going to have its own baby hatch.

The hatch will be set up at Rumah Balkis here and it will be run by the state government’s Women’s Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis).

Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim said the hatch would be set up by the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS). It would serve as a temporary home for babies and be equipped with various facilities.

Khalid said the state government decided to carry out this hatch project as part of its social responsibility.

The setting up of the hatch, however, did not mean that the state government encouraged premarital sex or give irresponsible people an easy way out.

“We want to save the babies and this hatch will ensure the babies are safe while the authorities pursue their next course of action.”

A toll-free telephone line would be set up for the public to get advice and information, he said.

Pekawanis would work closely with the Welfare Department and other NGOs in operating the hatch.
